The Sumerian Culture - The First Urban Civilization The story most likely starts in the Middle East around 4000 BC (6000 BP). The town settlements were developing in size and flourishing. Another stage in man s advancement was occurring. In what is today southern Iraq, or Ancient Mesopotamia, the main urban development was being made; towns developed into towns and after that towns into the considerable city states: Ur, Uruk, Ubaid, Eridu, Lagesh and so on.
